Does the watch order of Love Death and Robots matter?
Now… Coming back to the question at hand; Does the watch order of Love Death and Robots matter?
Is it really necessary to watch the episodes in a certain order, the answer is NO. Each episode is unique both in animation style and in the genre be it story, theme, and the message it conveys.
However, I have mentioned a few episodes which are my absolute favorite and probably the best out of the list of 35 episodes.
Intro:
On March 15 in the year 2019, Netflix released an anthology of 18 episodes for an Original series completed dedicated to Amination each with a runtime of not more than 21 minutes and creating history. The show’s unique style of animation and diverse storyline with different themes has won praise from critics and received multiple Awards and nominations including the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Created by Tim Miller and streamed on Netflix. Although the series is produced by Blur Studio, it includes genres mostly pertaining to comedy, horror, suspense, sci-fi, action, mind-break, thriller, mystery, and fantasy. This show has a little something for everybody. Which is why it has a separate fan base of its own.
What is Love Death and Robots:
Well, let’s just begin by saying that Love Death and Robots is an anthology of Animated episodes more specifically for a more Mature audience as almost all of its episodes are ‘Rated A’ because they contain pretty graphic depictions of gore, violence, some nudity, sex with a touch of dark humor. All one can do is nothing but indulge in this amazing viewing experience and binge-watch this ‘one of a kind’ piece of Artwork.
The number of Seasons and Episodes:
Altogether there are 35 episodes in total, with three Volumes, and Volume 1 has the most episodes ’18’, and most probably has some of the best ones in my opinion. Then comes Volume 3 with a total of 9 episodes just one more than Volume 2 and next in line after Volume 1 with great episodes as well.
With these many episodes, we come back to the question:Does the watch order of Love Death and Robots matter? Based on the table below I can safely say that it does not matter
Type of Animation:
While the series is produced by Blur Studio, individual episodes are produced by different animation studios from a selection of studios all around the world:
The animation type used in Love Death and Robots depending on the theme and the genre of the episode at hand is a 3D type and a normal 2D type. Characters and the style of animation applied in certain episodes are so real and vivid that it feels such that until you come across an action sequence you then realize that it is all done in animation, and it is not motion capture. In the episode ‘The Witness‘ a new animation technology is used which is never seen before on any platform whatsoever. The vivid and life-like background and building structures appear so real that you might be baffled at first.
Who knows…This might change the way we view amination and can definitely lead to many potentially great pieces of material in the future to come.
10 Best Love Death and Robots episodes:
I will try not to leak any spoilers while describing each episode briefly.
10. Shape Shifters: 3D style animation, a story about soldiers in the United States Army, with two units who are mentioned as ‘dog-soldiers’ throughout the entire episode until the very end where they gain newfound respect. The episode contains brotherhood, death, gore, violence, and an action-packed sequence that is so powerful that it will keep you rooting for the underdog protagonist facing huge odds and discrimination from fellow soldiers.
9. Good Hunting: Based in 20th Century China, a young boy, and his father encounter a shape-shifting creature that bewitches human men, and follows her to the den where the boy befriends the creature’s daughter. Progressing forward in time the boy works as a mechanic and the daughter as a prostitute. This episode shows how supernatural creatures and humans can co-exist at the same time. Also showing compassion and kindness towards fellow species in the same domain can lead to co-existing with mutual understanding and cooperation.
8. In Vaulted Halls Entombed: With amazing background sounds and suspenseful music at the correct time, this episode tells us a story about an extraction mission gone horribly wrong when the Sargent decides to take the squad inside a cave. As they further venture into unchartered territory and face creatures to which their arsenal of weapons is of no use, this episode shows how a series of bad decisions can lead to the certain and painful death of you and your team.
7. The Secret War: The episode is so Brilliantly written that it can be turned into a movie of its own. A platoon of soldiers hunting ghouls in the Siberian forest stumbles upon the nest, where they make their last stand. The cinematography even though this is animation, is astounding, with character introductions, the quiet and rather beautiful night before a chaotic day ahead, and the slow build-up to the epic climax. It all comes together to form a masterpiece of an episode.
6. Pop Squad: A Dystopian society where people live forever, and in order to avoid overpopulation having children are forbidden. Story circles around a Detective who overlooks the operation where parents are prosecuted and kids are executed. The episode depicts the horrors and mental traumas of a difficult job and how a huge price has to be paid for immortality. The dialogues are limited but the strong facial expression of the characters and subtle gestures speaks volumes.
5. Sonnie’s Edge: Action-packed episode with strong language from the get-go, nudity, sexual violence, and an action-packed fight sequence. A mind-bending concept of an underground fighting league where creatures controlled by humans fight in an arena. Backstabbing, betrayal, gore, and deceit is the theme of this episode with a surprise twist at the end.
4. The Witness: Another mind-bending story where the plot comes alive at the very end just like a complex jigsaw puzzle with a lot of twists and turns, it all comes together at the very end and leaves the viewers in awe. Thriller packed episode that will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the length of the episode. The animation style is such that you will feel as if you are in the character’s shoes and running for your life.
3. Jibaro: Not for photosensitive viewers, although this episode has almost no dialogues, however, will affect you personally and make you feel things. The animation style is very unique and the sounds and visuals are extremely vivid which will take you down an emotional rollercoaster. The story tries to tell us about greed and how it destroys even the most beautiful things in this world and it corrupts even the noblest of minds.
2. Bad Travellin: Everything falls into chaos when a creature hijacks a shark-hunting ship and demands that its needs are met. The captain of the Ship accepts the conditions in exchange for his life, and the crew conspires against him and performs the act of mutiny. The theme of this episode is dark and the death of the characters is pretty vivid combined with excellent music and camera angles making this episode the runner-up in this list.
1. Beyond the Aquila Rift: Talk about space travel, nudity, sex, romance, and deceit. The theme of this episode is pretty amazing and feels good until the climax is reached and the protagonist wakes up from his dream. OH, THE HORROR… when the realization finally hits. A sudden turn in the plot leaves viewers in shock and even wondering whether this is a scene from a movie or are there more content like this anywhere else. It leaves us wanting more…
Honorable Mentions
Snow in the Desert: Set up in a Dystopian world where there is sand everywhere, a world full of wanted outlaws and criminals with bounty hunters, bar fights, and secret hideouts. This episode has tried to show love in a hopeless place and that it can be found anywhere if you look for it long enough. One can feel the connection and chemistry between the characters and animation so real it will leave you wondering which parts are real and which are CGI.
Lucky 13: My absolute favorite episode, in the series, every moment in this is epic and the dogfight in this 15 min episode is much better than any fighter jet movie out there. Suspense until the last minute. Only a few episodes in this Love Death and Robots series that has this type of ending. The episode is short but the character development is fantastic and how well you make a connection with the character.
Conclusion:
So to sum up ‘Does the watch order of Love Death and Robots matter?’ No. Love Death and Robots is a prime example of what Peak animation looks like, Netflix has made an extremely bold move, thanks to whom we are witnessing such an amazing anthology of artwork that will most likely revolutionize the Animation industry.
